What Happens to Your Student Visa (SC500) If You Enrol in a Non-CRICOS Course?
If you are an international student in Australia, understanding the importance of enrolling in courses registered with the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). Enrolling in a non-CRICOS course can affect your Student Visa (Subclass 500) status.
Why Is CRICOS Important to Know?
CRICOS is the official register of Australian education providers approved to deliver courses to overseas students. Courses listed on CRICOS meet national standards, and providers are accountable for maintaining quality and compliance with visa requirements.
What Happens If I Enrol in a Non-CRICOS Course?
Understand that enrolling in a non-CRICOS course may result in a few issues that may impact your visa:
Enrolling in a course that is not registered on CRICOS may constitute a visa condition breach. Your visa is primarily granted based on your enrolment in a CRICOS-registered course; switching to a non-CRICOS course can result in a visa cancellation.
If the Department of Home Affairs discovers you are enrolled in a non-CRICOS course, they may consider this a breach of visa conditions, and you could receive a Notice of Intention to Consider Cancellation (NOICC) and have your visa cancelled. This applies even if you have already started the course.
A visa cancellation due to a visa condition breach can negatively affect your immigration record, making it more difficult to obtain future visas due to a possible section 48 bar and/or PIC4013.
What Should You Do Next?
Although visa processes can be overwhelming, ensure that your course provider is listed on CRICOS before enrolling.
If you have already enrolled in a non-CRICOS course, consult with an immigration lawyer for professional advice and the best next steps to avoid further complications. If possible, transfer to a CRICOS-approved course to maintain your visa status and maintain compliance with your visa conditions.
