Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) | Differences between Specialist Skills and Core Skills 

The current work-sponsored visa, the Skills in Demand (SID) (Subclass 482) visa, which replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa on 07 December 2024, has three streams under it, which are the Specialist Skills stream, the Core Skills stream and the Labour Agreement stream. Many would be wondering what the differences between the Specialist and Core Skills stream are, today, we have broken it down for you in a table below.  

 

What are the Differences between Specialist Skills and Core Skills Stream under Skills in Demand (SID) (Subclass 482)? 

Criteria Specialist Skills Stream Core Skills Stream 
Occupation List Occupations must be an ANZSCO occupation in Major Group 1, 2, 4, 5 or 6. Occupation excluded are trades workers, machinery operators, drivers, or labourers. Must be nominated in an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) 
Salary Threshold Minimum annual earnings of AUD 135,000; Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT) Minimum annual earnings of AUD 73,150; Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT) 
Work Experience Requirements Requires at least 1 year relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or related field Requires at least 1 year relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or related field 
English Requirements Must meet English requirement of equivalent to at least IELTS 5 in each test component Must meet English requirement of equivalent to at least IELTS 4.5 in each test component

Processing Time Commitment to a median of 7 days Commitment to a median of 21 days

Visa Applicant Charges The primary applicant and secondary applicants over 18 years old are AUD 3,115.  The primary applicant and secondary applicants over 18 years old are AUD 3,115.   
Secondary applicants under 18 years old are AUD 780. Secondary applicants under 18 years old are AUD 780.
