What are the Minimum Points for Subclass 189, Subclass 190 and Subclass 491?

What is a general skill migration (GSM)?

The GSM program enables qualified workers to seek permanent residency (PR) in Australia by considering their occupation, qualifications, and points score.

GSM encompasses the Australian government's broader strategies and policies aimed at attracting and granting permanent residency (PR) to skilled migrants in diverse occupations.

What are the Visa subclasses in General Skill Migration (GSM)?

The main subclasses under the General Skill Migration program are:

  1. Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)

  2. Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)

  3. Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491)

These subclasses differ in terms of processing times, points requirements, and the need for state/territory nomination. The key details about these subclasses are:

GSM Visa SubclassesKey Benefits
Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)Leads directly to permanent residency
Does not require nomination by a state/territory government
Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)Leads directly to permanent residency
Requires nomination by a state/territory government
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491)Provides a pathway to permanent residency after a provisional period
Requires nomination by a state/territory government

What do I need to apply for a visa under General Skill Migration?

The key requirements to apply for a visa under the GSM program are:

  1. English test: Applicant must obtain a "Superior" or equivalent English language test result.

  2. Positive skills assessment:

    1. The applicant must obtain a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority.

    2. The skills assessment will only consider work experience from the past 5 years.

  3. Lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI):

    1. Applicant needs to lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) in the SkillSelect system.

    2. This is the first step to be considered for an invitation to apply for a visa.

  4. Meet the minimum points score:

    1. Applicant needs to achieve a minimum of 65 points to be eligible. Applicants can accumulate points based on age, qualifications, work experience, etc.

    2. For the Subclass 190 and 491 visas, additional points can be earned through state/territory nomination.

  5. Receive an invitation to apply:

    1. After lodging the EOI, the applicant needs to wait for an invitation from the government to apply for the visa.

    2. Invitations are issued periodically based on the highest-ranked EOIs.

Note that the specific requirements may vary slightly between the different visa subclasses.

What Are the Current Minimum Points for the GSM Visas?

There are no minimum points for both the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) and the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491). The current minimum points for a Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) are listed below in a table.
