NEWS UPDATE: People Who is On the Manus Island or Nauru Could Be Granted Medical Treatment Visa by Transferring to Australia
The Home Affairs Legislation Amendment (Miscellaneous Measures) Bill 2018 (‘the bill’), which deals with the temporary transfer to Australia of transitory persons on Manus Island or Nauru, and their families requiring medical treatment, the Bill has passed through on 13 February and awaits Royal Assent.
The Bill’s explanatory memorandum states that:
This bill seeks to amend the Migration Act 1958 to require the temporary transfer to Australia of transitory persons on Manus Island or Nauru, and their families, if they are assessed by two or more treating doctors as requiring medical treatment. It also requires the temporary transfer of all children and their families from offshore detention to Australia for the purpose of medical or psychiatric assessment.
The amendments seek to be compatible with the Human Rights (Parliamentary Scrutiny) Act 2011, which is essential because it ensures Australia complies with international law and upholds human rights and positively engages with the international duty.
Should the Bill be passed by Royal Assent, children and adults who needs urgent medical care would be well treated. Since most children have been locked down in the Manus Island or Nauru, there is no avenue for them to get adequate medical care, which is inhuman. Thus, the Bill should be supported in order to get those sick kids and adults to Australia.
