COVID-19 Visa Concession Coming into Effect on 27 February

Temporary Concession for Certain Family Visa Applicants

Following the latest announcement by the Department of Home Affairs, certain Family visa applicants who have applied for a visa outside Australia will be eligible to be granted the visa while onshore. This will effectively override the requirement for certain Family visa streams that require offshore visa applicants to also be granted a visa offshore.

The temporary COVID-19 concession is only applicable to certain applicants who are in Australia and are unable to arrange to travel overseas to be granted the visa because of COVID-19 border restrictions. Eligible applicants include those who have applied for:

Parent Visa Concession

Another COVID-19 concession intended to come into effect on 24 March 2021 is for eligible Parent visa applicants who have made an application offshore. These applicants will be able to have their visa granted while in Australia. This concession applies to the following visa subclasses:

Please note that the current processing timeframes for Parent visas are not affected by the above concession.

For certain applicants who have been advised by the Department to travel outside Australia to be granted a parent visa but are unable to do so because of travel restrictions, the Department will endeavor to work with them to provide additional time until the applicants can travel safely, or until the visa can be granted onshore.
