What Happens if I Fail My Citizenship Test?

Your citizenship application has been approved, and you must now prepare for the citizenship test. However, you may wonder, what if I do not pass the citizenship test? What will happen then?

If you fail your citizenship test, what happens to your visa?

If you fail your citizenship test, it does not affect your current permanent resident (PR) visa or stop you from living in Australia. The Department of Home Affairs (DoHA) will rebook you for another appointment so that you can retake the test. There is no additional cost for you to sit the test again. You have up to 3 tries to pass the citizenship test. Otherwise, your citizenship application may be refused

Who is exempted to sit for the Citizenship Test?

Australian citizenship by conferral applicants do not need to sit the citizenship test if you:

  • are aged 17 years or younger at the time of applying

  • are aged 60 years or over at the time of applying

  • are the child of a former Australian citizen (who lost their Australian citizenship under specific circumstances)

  • Were born in Papua before 16 September 1975 to an Australian citizen born in Australia

  • Were born in Australia and are stateless (never been a citizen of another country and are not entitled to citizenship of another country)

  • Are unable to sit the test due to health issues or disability.
