NSW School Enrolment Policy for Dependents of Temporary Visa Holders Update

Beginning 1 January 2025, significant changes will be implemented in New South Wales (NSW) regarding the enrolment of students who are dependents of temporary visa holders. These changes aim to enhance these students' education access and streamline enrollment.

What are the key changes to enrolment policy?

1. Eligibility for Local School Enrolment

  • Open Enrolment: All students on a temporary resident visa can now enrol in their local school based on their residential address. This change simplifies the enrolment process for families residing in NSW.

2. Waived Enrolment Fees for Regional Holders

  • Fee Waivers: Families holding Temporary Skills Shortage visas (Subclass 482) and residing outside of greater Sydney and Wollongong will have their enrolment fees waived. This initiative supports regional families by reducing the financial burden associated with education.

What are the updated criteria for non-local enrolment?

NSW public schools have designated local enrolment areas to ensure sufficient space for students residing in those areas. However, families may apply for a non-local enrolment if they wish to enrol their child in a school outside their designated area, subject to availability. The updated criteria for non-local enrolment include:

1. Priority for Siblings

  • Sibling Priority: Non-local enrolment applications will be prioritised for siblings of currently enrolled students. This is especially relevant for siblings of students in support classes within eligible mainstream schools.

2. Consideration for School Staff Children

  • Staff Children: Schools may also consider non-local enrolment for children of school staff, providing additional flexibility for families connected to the school community.

What about the Enrolment Fees for Other Temporary Visa Holders?

If your child is a temporary resident on a visa other than TSS Subclass 482, the enrolment fees and tuition costs will generally depend on the specific visa subclass held by the student.

These changes to the NSW enrolment policy for dependents of temporary visa holders reflect a commitment to providing equitable access to education for all students. By allowing broader enrolment options and waiving fees for certain regional families, the NSW Government aims to support the educational needs of temporary residents and their families. Families are encouraged to stay informed about these changes and explore their options for school enrollment in 2025.
