Flexible Australian Permanent Residency Pathway For Overseas Talent
Following the announcement of Hon Karen Andrews MP and David Coleman, back in November 2019, there are now two main immigration programs designed to attract overseas highly skilled and specialist worker to benefit Australia, Australian worker and Australian economies:
Global Talent Employer Sponsored scheme (GTES); and
Global Talent independent program (GTI)
Global Talent Employer Sponsored scheme
The Global Talent Employer-Sponsored program allows eligible employers (see below for some of the key requirements) to sponsor overseas workers for highly-skilled niche positions that cannot be filled through local skilled workforce and other current available standard visa program. There are two streams available:
Established Business
o businesses must be accredited sponsors with the Department;
o has an annual turnover of $4 Million;
o the nominated salary threshold to be minimum $148,700; etc.
Start-up
o The business must be operating in the Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics sectors;
o The business must have received an investment of $50,000 from a registered investment fund or an Accelerating Commercialisation Grant,
o The business must have been approved by an additional independent bureaucratic body, the GTES start-up advisory panel
o the nominated salary threshold to be minimum $80,000; etc.
Some of the main features for the Global Talent Employer Sponsored scheme includes but not limited to:
Employer can access highly-skilled roles without being restricted to the current skill occupation list which allows great flexibility in finding the right talent and prescribed roles and duties
Flexibility to negotiate the maximum age requirement with the department to allow more eligible candidates with the right skills to be sponsored under this scheme
Long visa valid duration comparing to normal work sponsored visa (up to 4 years) with permanent residency pathway
There are currently 45 companies been approved under the GTS Scheme.
Global Talent Independent Program (GTI)
Under the Global Talent Independent Program (GTI), Global Talent officers of the Department of Home Affairs located in Berlin, Dubai, Santiago, Shanghai and Washington DC are to receive Expression of interest from highly talented individuals before recommending individuals to access the program and subsequent referral to apply for a Distinguished Talent Visa afterward. Employer sponsorship is consequently not needed for this visa stream. For eligible candidates under GTI, there will be a dedicated department contact to guide them through the process and their subsequent applications will receive the highest priority processing within the department.
The number of places to be offered under the current financial year under the GTI is up to 5000 places.
One prerequisite for the individuals under this GTI is that applicants must also receive a nomination from an 'organization with a national reputation' in their fields such as the peak body or Industry growth center. Candidates over 55 years old will additionally need to show that they would be of 'exceptional benefit' to Australia which is assessed on various factors.
